Problem 1: The Starks of Winterfell The northern part of the Seven Kingdoms is ruled by Eddard Stark, Warden of the North, Head of House Stark and Lord of Winterfell. Winterfell, the largest castle and most important man-made fortification in the North, has been home to the Stark family for generations. It was supposedly built thousands of years ago and due to its remote location, it was designed to endure countless harsh winters. In order to cope with these long, cold and snowy winters, the castle was built on top of a network of hot springs, thus providing an abundant supply of hot water to the castle residents for everyday use. Under the supervision of Eddard Stark, a novel space heating system was developed and installed throughout the castle. The system consists of long steel pipes (K – 60W /mk) equipped with longitudinal rectangular fins, as shown in the sketch below Hot water from the springs is supplied though these pipes and heat is then dissipated into the ambient air to warm up the room. The hot water from the springs is at Ti 80°C 450w/m2K. The air in the room is maintained at T-22°C, and provides a heat transfer coefficient of ho- 30 W/m2K on the outer surface of the pipe (and around the fins). The dimensions of the pipe heater system are detailed below with a flow rate that provides an internal heat transfer coefficient of h a) Sketch the thermal resistance diagram showing how heat is transferred from the hot-water to the ambient air.
