PSC 35500: Paris Agreement country commitments Assignment Help PSC 35500 Assignment 1
Paris Agreement country commitments (NDC) comparative analysis
Objective: To explain how and why commitments to the Paris Agreements differ between the

comparative analysis should identify factors such as socioeconomic status, climate
vulnerability, and geopolitical power that shape each country’s NDCs.
Assignment structure
This assignment is broken up into 4 steps that build upon each other to make it more
manageable to complete. Each step will be graded independently. We will hold one in-class
workshop on 9/22 to receive and provide feedback on your draft ideas before you refine the final
product.
Due dates
Step 1 Country Context: 9/13
Step 2 NDC comparison: 9/20
Step 3 Work Plan: 9/22
Final: 9/29

Assignment details
Step 1: Country Contexts (~1-2 pages, 2 points, due 9/13)
Using Climate Watch, summarize and compare basic information about the U.S. & your selected
country:
● Population
● GDP
● Geography
● GHG emissions (historic and current trends; total; per capita; per GDP )
● Sectors that contribute to GHG emissions
● Climate risk, vulnerability, and readiness
Discuss how that basic context might impact differences between the two countries in terms of:
● Level of ambition/urgency to address global climate change
● Barriers to implementing climate policies

Country
context: ~1
page, 2 pts
Does not include
all required
information (0)
Identifies all required
information, but could provide
more clear comparative
evaluation of how country
contexts shape their climate
policies (1)
Identifies pertinent

includes a coherent and
compelling evaluation
of how country contexts
shape their climate

Step 2: NDC Comparison (~2 pages, 3 points, due 9/20)
Using Climate Watch’s NDC tracker and the official NDC submissions, summarize & compare
differences in the NDC commitments between the U.S. & your country of choice:
● Mitigation: overall emissions reduction target (% reduction); sectors targeted for
mitigation
● Financial capacity: conditional vs unconditional targets
● Adaptation commitments
● National contexts as described in NDC
● Conditional vs unconditional commitments
Now that you have more information about their NDC pledges, discuss:
● Which country’s commitment do you think is more ambitious?
● What are the biggest differences you observe between the two commitments? What do

● What do you think are the main challenges each country faces in implementing their
commitments? Which challenges might be shared between both countries vs completely
different?

Step 3: Work Plan (~1-2 pages, 5 points, due 9/22)
● Develop an outline of the organizational structure for the final analysis
○ Establish the flow of the paper
○ Highlight the main points you want to make in each paragraph/section

○ What questions do you have to investigate further?
○ Are you missing critical information to develop your analysis?
○ If so, how/where can you get that information? (Note: While external sources are
welcome, you should be able to successfully complete this assignment using only
Climate Watch and the NDC submissions.)
○ What is your timeline for drafting the paper?
