Instruction: Instructions Recall that we follow the following steps to implement instructions for the multicycle MIPS (none of these steps is optional): 1. If the instruction is not an existing MIPS instruction, determine its machine code format. You want to choose a format that makes the next step easy (e.g.,to get the proper registers to the right places, in a way that is compatible with existing instructions); thus you may want to do this and the next step in parallel. 2. Describe (in Register Transfer Language) what the instruction does, and identify datapath elements referred to in the description. You should try to use the existing datapath in your RTL, though modifications are sometimes unavoidable. 3. Add any necessary datapaths, if they are not already present. You may need to add/modify other hardware elements (e.g.,MUXes). However, there are a few additional rules for datapath modifications: • Do not add an adder or another ALU – use the existing ALU instead. ALUs are big (compared to muxes or a register), and should be reused in a different cycle. • Do not lengthen the critical path. A common example of this error would be to add a path from the ALU output to an element that is using the ALU results. The correct way would be to store the ALU output in ALUOUT and use the ALUOUT data in the following cycle. 4. For any new hardware elements that were added in the previous step, add relevant control signals. In some cases you may be just modifying an existing control signal (e.g.,changing a 2-input MUX to a 3-input MUX, thus needing one additional select bit). 5. Modify the state machine to implement the instruction in as few cycles as possible. Note you need to add a new path for the new instruction, and also change existing paths if you have modified control signals in the previous step. In this course, I’m asking you to use mnemonics for the ALUOP field (e.g.,add, sub, op), so that you don’t have to worry about the bit decoding for the ALU control. Recall that the convention for signals not mentioned on the state machine is that those concerning reading/writing default to 0 while those that are about routing/transformations (e.g.,MUXes, ALU) default to X.
